KOKOMO FAMILY YMCA CLOSING FACILITIES IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
YMCA to provide community resources, support to critical care workers
The following is a statement from the Kokomo Family YMCA:
(Kokomo) March 16, 2020 – At the Kokomo Family YMCA, the safety and well-being of our members, staff, volunteers and the broader Howard and surrounding communities have always been and will always be a top priority.
We have been diligently monitoring all national and local updates surrounding the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation. In order to best ensure the health of our entire Y community, we have decided to close our YMCA facilities to the public effective 5 p.m. March 16. The closure will affect our Delmar E. Demaree (downtown) facility, Early Learning Center, and Camp Tycony. We agree with the decision of our partners within the city and had been preparing for a shutdown to safeguard the health of our members, staff and community.
We will provide special access to virtual classes to our members and resources to the community to keep everyone healthy and active over the next few weeks. At this time, we are shifting our focus to support those local critical care workers on the front lines of this pandemic with school age childcare services.
We understand this is a very concerning situation. The Kokomo Family Y has been a pillar of the Howard and surrounding communities for more than 145 years, throughout both good and challenging times. The decision to close our facilities was made to best ensure the safety of everyone in our community. We will continue to monitor this evolving situation and will work with local officials to determine what future actions will be necessary.
During this closure, we will provide updates and information directly to staff, members and participants via email. We will also be posting information to our website and social media channels: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
We are asking everyone to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and take their own measures to protect themselves, including not putting themselves in situations with large crowds or where they come in close contact with others, staying home if they do not feel well, frequently washing their hands with soap and water and covering their coughs and sneezes.
STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!
A MESSAGE ABOUT CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) FROM OUR CEO
March 13, 2020
The health and well-being of our members and staff is our top priority.
Dear Kokomo Family YMCA,
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) begins to have an increased impact on communities, the Kokomo Family YMCA feels it is important to connect with you to share how we are taking steps to maintain a clean, safe environment at all Y locations, and what you can do to help.
Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of our members and staff. We are committed to providing the safest possible environment for children and adults in our programs and services, and that includes taking the necessary steps to help prevent the spread of illness. At the Kokomo Family YMCA, our leadership is meeting regularly to ensure proper policies are in place and cleaning protocols are practiced to help protect our members, staff and visitors.

WHAT THE Y IS DOING TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF ILLNESS:
Staying informed and vigilant
Ensuring effective products
The products used to clean common spaces and surfaces at our Y locations are effective in preventing the spread of common viruses, including COVID-19.
Staff ensure equipment and surfaces are routinely wiped down with disinfectant, and that wipes for members to use before/after they use the equipment are kept well stocked and in view. Staff give extra attention to items used more frequently, like pieces of equipment, desktops, countertops, doorknobs, light switches, flush levers, partitions and sinks. We have increased our cleaning protocols, and staff will be cleaning frequently touched surfaces more often.
HOW YOU CAN HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF ILLNESS:
Stay home if you are feeling unwell
Wipe equipment off
Although YMCA staff disinfect each piece of equipment several times per day, we need your assistance. You should wipe surfaces of exercise equipment before and after use with provided disinfectant wipes in an effort to prevent the spread of germs. Sanitizing wipes are available on the wellness floor and in the studios. Hand sanitizer can be also be found throughout the building.
Clean hands regularly
Keep hands clean by washing with soap and water for 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your face/nose/eyes/mouth.
Cover your cough/sneeze
Make sure to cough/sneeze into your arm or a tissue to prevent the spread of germs through the air, and be sure to wash your hands after coughing/sneezing to prevent leaving germs behind on surfaces.
Trust the experts
Above all else, we encourage our members to pay close attention to the precautionary measures and the most accurate, up-to-date information surrounding COVID-19 as laid out by the Centers for Disease Control
, your state
health department and the World Health Organization
. These agencies provide the most trusted and accurate information for public consumption regarding COVID-19.
While no one can predict with certainty how severely COVID-19 will impact the United States and our local communities, we are monitoring the situation and preparing alternate plans if the condition worsens. We will keep everyone updated with information as it develops. Thank you for working with us to keep Kokomo and our community healthy and safe.
Stay Safe and Healthy,
Chief Executive Officer
